Built in 1963 by the William Kaufman Organization and designed by Swiss–born architect William Lescaze, 777 Third was designed according to the modernist philosophy referred to as the International Style. This modernism favored the elimination of ornament, and the proud triumph of form that followed function seeking to create a new classic style for the modern age.
The expansive outdoor plaza is marked by two sculptures: Beverly Pepper’s dynamic, rotating stainless steel Contrappunto, and Theodore Ceraldi’s pop-art Big Red Swing. The building’s lobby is a classic – soaring ceiling’s book-leafed marble walls, terrazzo floors and elevator banks paneled with East Indian laurel wood.
